Deep Thoughts: Treading a different Path

“Where do you work?”

This question is quite irritating for any graduate that has been out of school for a year plus and hasn’t gotten a decent job. Folks can’t just keep their mouth shut, they always have to ask as if you are not asked daily by the nuances of your family members and the reduction or lack of pocket money from pops or mom.

These folks have every advice for you on why you haven’t got a job yet and can’t seem to offer a solution e.g like the connection to give you one. So why are they so interested in asking?

The truth is people enjoy hearing people’s problems so they could forget about theirs and also feel superior as they provide their awesomely useless advice and in as much as you can’t avoid these people… you meet them in church, at the cafe, on the street even in your own room – your BBM… you can give them an answer they could never forget – punch the person and tell them to mind their business

Yeah right! Not if you are a typical Nigerian and it’s your Dad’s friend, the popular family friend or the highly respected church elder asking.

So how then do we answer to keep these concerned people off our backs?

That has also been my dilemma and I believe it’s all about being creative and letting how you live answer for you.

That’s what this journal is all about, join me as we go on a trip down how I am redefining my career path and staying apart from the majority. Why? you may ask after all I am not working in that ideal job yet but I can tell you I have been able to change the question of where do you work to what do you do and my answers all vary.

I am a Business Analyst, Creative Teacher, Chocolate Cake Specialist, Project Manager, Social Engineer, and Innovation Consultant and it has been fun searching for ‘where’ I will work because I am living the answer.

And how did I arrive at this amazing answer? A simple quote says it all

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.’ – Mark Twain
