How To Hear From God

Communication is a major characteristic of any good relationship. Any relationship where communication is absent, that relationship is bound to fail at some point.

When one becomes a Christian, a relationship with God forms. A relationship where He speaks, loves, guides, cautions, and cares for you.

This is to say that God is constantly communicating with us. And when He speaks, His desire is that we hear Him. He longs for an amazing relationship with His children.

The ability to hear God is because of having regular conversations with Him. A nonstop interaction with Him will lead to a strong and sturdy connection with God. One where we can hear God audibly when He speaks, and we respond appropriately.

Like I mentioned earlier, God is always talking, we are the ones either hearing or not hearing. Inability to hear from God is because of the worries of life or failure to position your ears to hear God’s voice. Nevertheless, it is in our best interest to condition our ears and hearts to be able to always receive from God.

In John 10:4, Jesus says that His sheep hears His voice. This emphasizes the part hearing from God plays in guidance and direction from God. If we say that we are the “sheep” or disciples of Jesus, it is essential that we hear Him.

And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

John 10:4 NKJV

Are you a sheep that longs to hear the voice of your good shepherd? Here are ways in which you can do that:

  1. Know that God is a person and longs for a relationship with you: God is not some faraway deity you worship every now and then. He is a person as well as your heavenly Father. Just as every father wants to share a connection with their child, so does God. Seeing God as a father, not just God, will make it easier to hear from Him. Because you share a special fondness with Him.
  2. Be still and know He is God: In Ps 46:10, God admonishes us to “be still and know that He is God”. We see here that serenity creates an atmosphere for accessing God. It is when we are still that we can tune our spiritual ears to hear the voice of God. There is a tendency to stray away from the voice of God, due to the many activities in life. So, consciously take out time to be still and meditate on His word. And in that moment God’s voice becomes clearer.

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Psalms 46:10 NKJV
  1. God speaks in different ways: God’s speaking is not limited only to a voice. He speaks to us differently in times and seasons. He can speak to us through a dream, an open vision, His word (The Bible), impressions in our spirit, and through our thoughts. Hence, be open minded and do not limit your hearing God to a particular pattern.
  2. By faith: All things are possible to him that believes (paraphrased, Mark 9:23). We hear God by faith, believing that He is already speaking to us and being still to hear Him speak.

Jesus said to them, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.”

Mark 9:23 NKJV

Our God is a person, a father, and a relational God, He wants us to come close and be in constant communication with Him, as we go through life with His wisdom and guidance. Pay attention to Him and enjoy a wonderful relationship with Him.
