Another Love Story

I recently read an article that went viral about a bus conductor and a Unilag babe and I wondered how possible this was as some conductors could be overbearing at times, they seem to always be a pain in the neck of passengers. This event blew my mind if it was real.

Well it was the last day of a 3 weeks course I had attended and as usual, we always returned home in a friend’s car but her husband decided to come along so we had an extra addition and it was a great addition as I learned something new ooh! Well, husband and wife gist, let me not go there but they were a cool couple.

So we were heading towards Iyana Ipaja and we took a turn at the roundabout connecting the bridge and there we met a traffic controller and a policeman under their shed (Thank God for the small hold up around that side). Well, who usually cares about a policeman that is out to make your life something else on the road. Our dear friend’s husband kept looking at these men. Well, this was the conversation that ensued between the policeman and Mr. Ay, although I was not conscious of their conversation at the initial stage to know who kick-started the conversation, I am very sure it was Mr. Ay in his very bubbling manner. I had to keep up after a while because it got interesting.

Policeman; Oga this one that you are looking at us like this do you want to drink?

Allow me to talk here ooh! In this season of ex-ebola, seriously! Share a drink with someone I don’t know? a policeman for that matter? The things they have done ehnn! let me divert small, one day I was so late for service and this policeman decided to do stop and search on a Sunday morning, he wasn’t searching the cab o! It is civilized looking humans that he decided to check…Noooo! I don’t want to drink, but it wasn’t me they asked.

Mr. Ay: Yes Sir.

The drink boy rushes to bring the drink (Yoghurt – I can’t remember the brand’s name). Bear in mind that the drink had already drunk by the policeman.

Mr. Ay; (Gulps drink)

I had to check the closeness of the bottle to the mouth. It was too close for comfort

Mr. Ay; Oga let me get a drink for both of you since I have taken from your drink

He signals the boy selling the drink to come take money for two drinks. Well by the time we had turned one of the policemen had already come out of his shed to salute this man in the car who had touched him with his kind heart. They kept waving till we drove off. Trust us in the car we didn’t let the matter go.

Mr Ay’s wife; That man has a story to tell his children. Do you think if anything happens to my husband later in that particular spot the man won’t stand up for him?

All of us; Mr. Ay that was risky.

Mr. Ay; I believe God is not a wicked God. Even if that man has anything with the heart that I did it I believe nothing can happen to me.

The smile on the policeman’s face was priceless. We just knew we had deposited in the man’s emotional bank account. Just like the conductor and the Unilag babe. We sometimes forget to do acts of kindness to people who it seems can’t pay us back or reciprocate but this just taught me that everyone needs love not just people within our sphere of influence. Even hostile people like soldier-man, policeman…love breaks them down.

Here are some of Mother Teresa’s quotes on kindness and love;

“I alone cannot change the world but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”

“Some people come in our life as a blessing. Some come in our life as lessons.”

“Don’t look for big things, just do small things with great love…The smaller the thing, the greater must be our love.”

“In this life, we cannot always do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

“Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God – the rest will be a given.”

“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest to you.”

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

I try to give to the poor people for love what the rich could get for the money. No, I wouldn’t touch a leper for a thousand pounds; yet I willingly cure him for the love of God.

By the way, he should be contesting soon so get ready to vote Mr. Ay! Sounding like a campaign manager!

  • For me there was a night I was taking a stroll with my mother. Just on our way back I felt very thirsty and I asked my mother to give me money to buy water, when she searched herself she had 100 naira and all I wanted was a sachet of water which goes for 10naira so i asked the lady selling the water to give me 1sachet but she refused claiming that she didn’t have change. So we decided to leave on our way a muslim man fondly called(aboki) called us back and brought out money to pay for the sachet of water. I was shocked that I almost refused it, mind you i meant shocked not scared. I was surprised that such a person that I would never imagine could do that. Sorry to add to your message but if you consider anything before doing good it is wrong. God bless Shalomtruth.

    • Hi Joy, adding to my message (smiles). It is a welcomed addition. Great comment. It is a wake up call for everyone. I would have been shocked too if I was the one. This same lady friend I talked about the day we were coming back, her side mirror got cracked. It was also an aboki that helped pack sand and advised we add it to the place that we wanted to glue. We were happy that we didn’t look down on him when he was talking to us.
